Loneliness has been found to impact multiple aspects of a person's health but can it affect our immune system? The answer is yes, people who are lonely have an immune system that functions differently than others. Studies have found that the pain of loneliness activates the immune systems fight or flight defense. How does this impact our immune system? When researching it was found that lonely people had a more active white blood cell, which causes iinflammation similar to what a bacteria would cause, on top of that it also seems that lonely people have fewer interferons.
